FSED 1030 Funeral Directing

2 Credit Hour(s)
This course introduces the primary duties and responsibilities of the funeral director. Special emphasis is placed on the funeral director’s role in working with the family of the decedent, as they select options for funeral rites, ceremonies, and committal services. Legal and ethical obligations, as well as the value of effective communication skills, are also examined.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Identify the primary responsibilities of the funeral director.
  2. Recognize the time frames in which services of the funeral director are typically provided (i.e., preneed, at-need, and post funeral follow-up).
  3. Explain proper telephone etiquette and procedures.
  4. Demonstrate the process of transferring dead human remains from the place of death to the funeral home as well as use of generally accepted procedures and equipment.
  5. Demonstrate the effective communication skills which are necessary to meet with a family in the arrangement conference.
  6. Compare and contrast fraternal and military procedures.
  7. Compare and contrast various American, ethnic, and cultural religious funeral customs.
  8. Explain the difference between pre-planned and pre-funded funeral rites and ceremonies with client families.
  9. Describe the basic expectations and considerations for the shipping of dead human remains.
  10. Define specific vocabulary associated with the funeral service profession.


Prerequisite(s):

Admission to AAS/FSE Program and FSED 1010  ; must pass all FSED designated courses with a grade of C or higher to progress to next level course
This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.
