FSED 2040 Embalming II

2 Credit Hour(s)

This course illustrates the advanced theoretical aspects of embalming and a continuation of FSED 2020. Special emphasis is placed on the principles and techniques of embalming, which includes case analysis, methods of injections and drainage, cavity embalming, and special problem cases. The cremation curriculum focuses on the important considerations when working with those that choose cremation as a form of disposition. This includes proper identification, legal authorization, use of third party crematories, required forms, cremation containers, containers for cremated deceased, cremation merchandise, services in conjunction with cremation, arranging for disposition of cremated deceased, shipping cremated deceased, FTC Compliance, and the history of cremation.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Interpret the causes and manners of death whereby notification of death to public officials is required.
  2. Compare and contrast the concepts of sanitation, disinfection, temporary preservation, and restoration of dead human remains.
  3. Incorporate the necessary terminology to facilitate communication with members of allied professions and the public.
  4. Summarize the importance of cooperation with professional agencies as well as the responsibilities pertaining to respect for the dead human body and professional agencies (which include but are not limited to, the medical examiner and/or coroner, hospitals, organ procurement agencies, OSHA, and the FTC.
  5. Justify and employ the use of embalming instruments, equipment, and sundries, as well as embalming techniques and procedures.
  6. Analyze the general chemical principles of embalming fluids and calculations and summarize the chemical components.
  7. Determine adequate methods of self-protection from communicable and infectious diseases, personal and environmental protective measures and hazardous chemicals.
  8. Demonstrate safe environmental work practices through proper disposal of contaminated materials and proper methods of disposal of blood and body fluid during and following the embalming.
  9. Support the ethical practices, legal and professional responsibilities associated with the custody, sheltering, identification, and preparation of the dead human body by the process of or preparation without embalming.
  10. Prescribe the anatomical consideration for vessel sites and selections.


Prerequisite(s): Admission to AAS/FSED Program, FSED 2020  and FSED 2030  ; must pass all FSED designated courses with a grade of C or higher to progress to next level course
Corequisite(s): FSED 2050   and FSED 2060  ; must pass all FSED designated courses with a grade of C or higher to progress to next level course
