Digital Photography Technical Certificate

Effective Term: Spring 2023

This certificate is designed to introduce students to the technical skills required to make successful images while exploring the process behind creating photographs. By understanding the camera and history of image making, students will gain knowledge of ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds along with workflow, composition, lighting, storytelling, and image editing.

Upon completion of this program, certificate holders will be qualified to work in the industry as an entry-level: wedding photographer, commercial photographer, portrait photographer, travel photographer, stock photographer, photojournalist, sports photographer, wildlife photographer, fashion photographer and real estate photographer. In addition, the courses completed in this program may be applied towards an A.A.S. degree in Graphic Arts Technology and Graphic Arts Technology, Interactive Multimedia Production.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this technical certificate, successful students will have demonstrated:

  • The ability to manage, organize, and process digital files. 
  • An understanding of the basic camera setting. 
  • An understanding of how images are constructed using composition, natural lighting, and camera angles. 
  • An understanding of how images are constructed using ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and depth of field. 
  • The ability to manage, organize, and process professional photographs using image editing software. 

Second Semester: 9 Credit Hours


Third Semester: 6 Credit Hours


Total Certificate Credits: 21


Note: Students must take the prerequisites for the 2000-level classes in the second semester in order to take them in the third semester.
