Southwest Workforce & Community Solutions (SWCS) provides personal enrichment, professional development, and community programs for the Greater Memphis region.  Courses are available on campus and online.  SWCS delivers many career and technical education offerings, including tailored employee assessment services, technical skill training and certificate and certification programs to support professional advancement.

Southwest Workforce & Community Solutions (SWCS) helps area and regional businesses meet workforce goals by providing high-quality training and assessment.  SWCS works closely with area Chambers of Commerce, Workforce Mid-South, and many other partners who help recruit prospective companies to the region. Training is coordinated and closely aligned with these organizations and their strategic planning and recruitment efforts.  Each training course or program is custom designed with flexible schedules encompassing practical, state-of-the-art programming offered at competitive prices, on-site or at a choice of locations.

Southwest Workforce & Community Solutions (SWCS) has a rich history of providing training and assessment services to companies and organizations.  By offering in-depth assessments for businesses, the nature and scope of performance issues are identified and training can be designed and delivered with optimal results.

The SWCS’ staff is trained and certified in the use of a variety of professional and technical assessments including; Amatrol eAssessments, ACT WorkKeys®, Developing A Curriculum (DACUM), KeyTrain® assessment tools, Scientific Management Techniques Inc. skills assessments, as well as National Healthcareer Association certifications.

Southwest Workforce & Community Solutions (SWCS) offers continuing education and professional development training for adult learners.  Hundreds of courses are offered online and on campus, focusing on in-demand skills, preparation and attainment of industry credentials and career advancement.  Programs and courses are available throughout the year in a wide range of topics from arts and languages, project and business management, healthcare, personal and professional excellence and leisure.  SWCS believes learning should be a lifelong endeavor.

The Mid-South Quality-Productivity Center (MSQPC) is a partnership between Southwest and the Greater Memphis Chamber.  Since its inception in 1988, MSQPC has conducted quality training for hundreds of businesses and organizations in Memphis, the Mid-South and around the globe.  MSQPC serves offers a vast array of individual quality productivity programs, and frequently delivers custom tailored training.  With a renewed focus on healthcare, education, manufacturing and the service industry, MSQPC provides Baldrige-based assessments, Lean Six Sigma instruction, benchmarking, knowledge management and innovative training and consulting.

Assistance from TSBDC at Southwest Tennessee Community College is available to anyone interested in beginning a small business for the first time or improving or expanding an existing one.

Starting and Sustaining a Small Business

In cooperation with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the State of Tennessee and the City of Memphis, hosts and supports the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) throughot Shelby and Fayette counties. The TSBDC provides in-depth, high-quality assistance to small business owners, entrepreneurs and individuals with business ideas.

Any current or future entrepreneur can schedule an appointment to visit the TSBDC for unbiased business advice and high-quality training at no charge.  TSBDC’s certified business counselors assist with startup information, preparing business plans, basic accounting, loan packaging, acquiring financing and cash flow analysis, basic tax planning and IRS requirements, beginning basics in government contracting, market research, strategic planning for growth and expansion and business management.

TSBDC, along with its training partners and subject matter experts, provides free training with business startups, planning, strategy, finances,marketing, government contracting, taxes, human resources management, bid proposals, exporting and importing, credit repair, customer relations and managing risk.

Southwest is unique because it has a commitment to providing a comprehensive array of services and programs to all segments of the community.

Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) Program

Upon successful completion of the CPS examination, the student will be eligible for 19 hours of college credit toward the Office Technology A.A.S. degree, once they have completed at least nine credit hours at Southwest and are currently enrolled in a program of study leading to a degree. A record of the CPS examination scores, award of the CPS certificate, and a written request for award of credit must be provided to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment and the Office of Records. Upward Bound - College Prep for Eligible High School Students

Upward Bound is a pre-college educational program funded by the U.S. Department of Education which assists eligible students in their efforts to successfully complete high school and obtain a college education. Upward Bound provides high school students with comprehensive educational services specifically designed to enhance learning and to heighten self-confidence.

Eligible participants must be enrolled in ninth or tenth grade and attend one of the following high schools:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Preparatory Academy (MLK)
  • Hamilton
  • Douglass
  • Trezevant
  • Manassas
