GART 1200 Digital Photography I

3 Credit Hour(s)
This course will focus on the elements of composition in photography for graphic artists and others who wish to produce digital photographs suitable for publishing or photographic illustration work. This course will instruct students in the use of basic digital photographic equipment, the rules of composition, and subject matter.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Assemble practical print layouts using text, vector based illustrations, and pixel based images.  Combining skills in design, typography, and pre-press production to achieve design excellence.
  2. Design, develop, and maintain web pages through the use of HTML coding and vector/pixel based imaging.
  3. Develop a highly competitive portfolio to display a skill set to aggressively seek a position in the graphic arts industry.
  • Use elements of composition, camera angles and framing of subject to create well composed photographs suitable for commercial use.
  • Define themes with a visual sense of composition and mood.
  • Scout appropriate location for a shoot.
  • Understanding of and use of the rules of composition


This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.
