COMM 2450 Introduction to Public Relations

3 Credit Hour(s)
This course introduces the history, basic theories, and functions of public relations, focusing primarily on principles and practice. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of understanding media audiences, messaging, and creating strategic writing for basic concepts used in this discipline.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Understand the impact regarding the role and function of contemporary public relations in society and in the global economy. (I)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the evolution of public relations throughout history and recognize the range of careers available in today’s contemporary practice. (R)
  3. Identify and explain the four-step basic process of public relations which includes research, planning, communication, and evaluation. (I)
  4. Demonstrate knowledge regarding the basic theories of communication, including persuasion, and how to apply them to specific public relations situations. (M)
  5. To understand the overall concept of crisis communications and the role of the public relations practitioner in these situations. (I)
  6. Recognize and understand the ethical implications of public relations. (I)
