BIOT 1010 Introduction to Biotechnology

4 (3 lecture; 3 lab) Credit Hour(s)

Includes career exploration, history, and applications of DNA/ RNA technology, molecular biology, bioethics, radiation safety, and laboratory practices. Laboratory exercises, field trips, and demonstrations illustrate the basic techniques of biotechnology, including fundamental concepts like the metric system, equipment safety, chemical nomenclature, states of matter, and solution concentrations.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Students will correctly identify various careers in biotechnology.
Students will demonstrate an ability to identify basic components of the cell.
Students will demonstrate mastery in the subject of DNA and related analysis tools.
Students will demonstrate basic mathematical calculations necessary in preparation of solutions, metric conversion, and determination of pH.
Students will identify the use of proper instrumentation for measurement of weights and volume.
