CHEM 1110 General Chemistry I

4 (3 lecture hours; 3 lab hours) Credit Hour(s)


This is the first course in a two-semester sequence for science majors, pre-professional students, and pre-engineering students. The course covers fundamental concepts including measurements, language, and stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, ionic and covalent bonding, states of matter, the gas laws, solutions, and thermochemistry. This course meets the prerequisites for further study in chemistry in baccalaureate programs.

  • Use Scientific principles to apply experimental techniques, make observational analyses, interpret experimental results, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Describe the natural and/or physical world using basic scientific language and processes.
  • Apply scientific principles to address problems or issues in the natural and/or physical world.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Perform chemical calculations accurately, including unit and temperature conversions, solutions, and stoichiometry.
  • Use significant figures correctly in calculations.
  • Use the periodic table and a knowledge of atomic structure to explain the behavior of elements and compounds.
  • Recognize types of chemical reactions and be able to predict the products of those reactions.
  • Apply basic thermodynamic concepts to chemical reactions.
  • Use gas laws to explain the behavior of gases.
  • Write an electron configuration 
  • Describe the types of chemical bonds and to draw structures for compounds.
  • Use MO theory and valence bond theory to help predict the bonding and geometry of molecules.
  • Describe and explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.


Prerequisite(s): Grade of at least “C” in CHEM 1010  or MATH 1710  or MATH 1740  or score on math placement exam (ALEKS) earning placement into MATH 1830  or higher.
