ESCI 1010 Weather and Climate 4 (3 lecture hours; 3 lab hours) Credit Hour(s) ESCI 1010 and ESCI 1020 are non-sequential science courses for general education. Students are introduced to basic concepts and fundamental principles of weather and climate.
General Education Learning Outcomes (TBR Approved)
- Use Scientific principles to apply experimental techniques, make observational analyses, interpret experimental results, and draw logical conclusions.
- Describe the natural and/or physical world using basic scientific language and processes.
- Apply scientific principles to address problems or issues in the natural and/or physical world.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply universal directions using compass points, azimuths, and directional arrows for the identification of wind systems and ocean currents.
- Examine and apply the controls of latitude, seasons, pressure, wind and ocean currents as weather fundamentals.
- Plot geographic grid locations on maps using latitude and longitude fundamentals.
- Use mathematical computations accurately in calculations.
- Convert temperatures from fahrenheit to celsius and reverse.
- Establish standard, local, Zulu, and daylight saving times for world time zones.
- Determine climate classifications employing the Koppen mathematical method for world climates.
Prerequisite(s): READ 0810 and ENGL 0810 and MATH 0101 or MATH 0100 or MATH 0410 or MATH 0530 or equivalent.
