HIST 2060 African-American History 3 (3 lecture hours) Credit Hour(s) This course surveys the African-American experience from the African background to the present.
- Analyze historical facts and interpretations.
- Analyze and compare political, geographic, economic, social, cultural, religious, and intellectual institutions, structures, and processes across a range of historical periods and cultures.
- Recognize and articulate the diversity of human experience across a range of historical periods and the complexities of a global culture and society.
- Draw on a historical perspective to evaluate contemporary problems/issues.
- Analyze the contributions of past cultures/societies to the contemporary world.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Students will demonstrate understanding of the West African origins of African Americans and identify the retention of West African culture that connects people of the African Diaspora.
- Students will be able to define key terms, historical facts, events, and people that have contributed to the experiences of African Americans.
- Students will demonstrate critical thinking about how African Americans have, through their own active agency, shaped their history in response to and independent of racial oppression.
- Students will demonstrate appreciation for both commonality and diversity among African Americans.
- Students will be able to assess the significance of African American history within the context of U.S. History.
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 0810 and READ 0810 , or equivalent
