PHRX 2030 Sterile Products 4 credit hours [3 lecture + 1 lab hour (3 lab contact hours/week)] Credit Hour(s) The course provides an understanding of the fundamentals of sterile product preparation. Topics may include medications and parenteral administration, facilities, equipment, supplies utilized in admixture preparation, techniques utilized in parental product compounding, terminology and calculations used in preparation of parenteral products, parenteral medication incompatibilities, and quality assurance in the preparation of parenteral products. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- The student will demonstrate a basic knowledge of the field of microbiology by describing the characteristics of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of microscopic and macroscopic characteristics, specimen sources, and general pathology of a variety of bacteria of medical importance in man.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the facilities, garb, equipment, and aseptic technique used in the preparation of sterile products.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the properties of various sterile products, including those used in total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy.
- The student will perform calculations used in the preparation of sterile products.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of quality control and quality assurance policies in the compounding pharmacy.
This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.
