SOCI 1040 Social Problems 3 (3 lecture hours) Credit Hour(s) A critical reasoning approach is used in examining social problems and issues from the micro-social and global perspectives. Primary emphasis is placed on understanding the ‘social construction’ of social problems, their magnitude, severity, causes, consequences, and possible solutions.

- Recognize, describe, and explain social institutions, structures, and processes occurring within a complex global and diverse society.
- Examine the impact of behavioral and social scientific research on major contemporary issues and their disciplines’ effects on individuals and society.
- Gather, analyze, and present research data perceptively and objectively using appropriate principles, methods, and technologies for the purpose of drawing logical conclusions on human behavior.
- Analyze and communicate the values and processes that are used to formulate theories regarding the social context of individual human behavior in the social and behavioral sciences.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize the application of the sociological perspective to social analysis
- Examine the myths, paradoxes, and pitfalls inherent in analyzing social problems
- Examine various approaches to the study of social problems
- Examine selected social problems and related issues
- Recognize the social construction of “fact claims”
- Compare, contrast, and apply sociological concepts and theories to explain particular social problems and to identify possible solutions
Prerequisite(s): ENGL 0810 and READ 0810 or equivalent
