SPAN 1010 Elementary Spanish I 3 Credit Hour(s) This course introduces students to foundational Spanish-language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It emphasizes the understanding and application of basic grammar concepts, including parts of speech and the conjugation of verbs in the present and past tenses. Additionally, students will gain insight into the diverse cultures of Spain and various Hispanic American countries. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in basic Spanish language skills: Students will be able to read, write, listen, and speak in Spanish at a beginner level, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar structures in both present and past tenses to communicate effectively in simple, everyday situations.
- Apply understanding of Spanish grammar: Students will identify and correctly use various parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns, and conjugate regular and irregular verbs in both the present and past tenses in oral and written communication.
- Comprehend spoken and written Spanish texts: Students will be able to understand and respond to simple spoken and written Spanish texts, identifying key ideas, specific details, and cultural references, while demonstrating an understanding of the context in which the language is used.
- Analyze and compare cultural aspects of Spain and Hispanic American countries: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the cultural diversity within the Spanish-speaking world, comparing cultural practices, traditions, and social norms from both Spain and various Hispanic American countries, and incorporating this cultural knowledge into language use.
