PSYC 1030 Introduction to Psychology

This course provides an overall introduction to psychology, including a brief history of psychology, research strategies, biological bases of behavior, learning, memory, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, psychological disorders, techniques of therapy, and applied science.

  • Think critically about how individuals are influenced by social institutions in their own and other diverse cultures.
  • Investigate the relationship between individuals and societies as it affects personal behaviors, social development, and the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities.
  • Examine the impact of behavioral and social scientific research on major contemporary issues and their disciplines’ effects on individuals and society.
  • Evaluate ethical implications in the social and behavioral sciences.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with major concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings as they relate to psychology.
  • Examine the impact of behavioral and social scientific research on major contemporary issues as it applies to both individuals and communities.
  • Understand and apply psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues.
  • Explore the relationship between the individual and society as it affects personal behavior, social development, and the quality of life of the individual, family, and community.
  • Recognize the use of appropriate research methods within the social and behavioral sciences.
  • Analyze and communicate the values and processes that are used to formulate theories regarding human behavior.
  • Understand how individuals are influenced by political, geographic, economic, cultural, and family institutions in their own and other cultures.


Prerequisite(s): READ 0810 or equivalent and ENGL 0810 or equivalent.
