THEA 1060 Introduction to Stage Management

3 (3 lecture hours) Credit Hour(s)
Stage management is crucial to all entertainment: theater, dance, music, opera, film, and enterprise endeavors. There will always be a person in charge whenever there is an “event.” This one-semester course will teach both the methods and principles behind stage management, demonstrating how to support a production while facilitating the work of directors, designers, artists, creators, and performers. In addition to teaching the specific technical skills necessary for each part of the production process, this course will address the intellectual and managerial skills that make stage management an art.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understanding Roles and Responsibilities: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, and ethical considerations of a stage manager within a theatrical production team.
  • Effective Communication and Collaboration: Students will practice clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with directors, designers, actors, and crew members.
  • Organizational Skills: Students will develop organizational techniques, including scheduling, rehearsal management, and tracking production elements, to ensure a smooth and efficient production process.
  • Rehearsal and Performance Coordination: Apply stage management techniques to coordinate rehearsals and performances, including script tracking, cue calling, and problem-solving under real or simulated production scenarios.
  • Crisis Management, Problem-Solving, and Adaptability: Students will analyze potential challenges and unexpected situations in rehearsal and performance. They will implement safety protocols and devise crisis management strategies to apply problem-solving skills and adaptability under pressure.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Students will create and maintain accurate, detailed production documentation, such as prompt books, rehearsal reports, and performance logs, that reflect industry standards.

This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university they intend to transfer to for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about the transferability of credits.
