THEA 2610 Costume Design & Construction 3 (3 lecture hours) Credit Hour(s) Costume makers are responsible for making or tailoring any costume that cannot be purchased for a production or concert, including hats, wigs, and hosiery. Our course introduces beginning design principles as they apply to costuming, garment fitting, and pattern modification. Students will garner hands-on experience like basic machine and hand-sewing techniques, and will receive comprehensive guidance on the tasks and responsibilities of an entry-level customer. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be assessed on their abilities in:
- Technical Sewing Skills: Students will develop foundational skills in sewing and garment construction, demonstrating proficiency in essential techniques such as pattern reading, cutting, and sewing.
- Pattern Use and Modification: Students will interpret and modify commercial and custom patterns, adapting them for size adjustments, style changes, and specific performance needs.
- Fabric and Material Knowledge: Students will develop an understanding of different fabric types, fibers, and materials, learning how to choose, handle, and care for fabrics appropriate to various costume construction projects.
- Garment Fitting and Alteration Techniques: Students will perform fittings on actors or dress forms, making necessary alterations to ensure a proper fit and understanding how to adjust costumes based on movement and comfort requirements.
- Collaboration and Communication: Students will collaborate effectively with directors, designers, and other members of a production team, communicating design ideas and responding to feedback within a collaborative environment.
- Safety and Equipment Usage: Students will demonstrate knowledge of costume construction equipment, tools, and materials, adhering to safety protocols and best practices in a costume shop environment.
This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university they intend to transfer to for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about the transferability of credits.
