General Program Learning Outcomes for the University Parallel, Music Emphasis, A.S.

Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  1. To describe the basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form and tone color. 
  2. To recognize musical styles and periods. 
  3. Discuss important composers and how they relate to the social climate of their era. 
  4. To discover ways to become a better listener, not concerned with liking or disliking music, but rather perceiving it. 
  5. To experience and appreciate a live musical performance.
Specific Music Based Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in music theory, notation, and harmony. 
  2. Demonstrate technical fluency, including the ability to perform assigned repertoire with correct notes and rhythms, good tone, and appropriate tempo. 
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in ear and/or sight training on their instrument or vocals. 
  4. Create musical demo recordings.

Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.

2 Review General Education pages and select a 2000 level literature course (ENGL).

Students must have at least 8 hours, including at least one semester of private instruction in voice or an instrument and at least one semester of an ensemble. Additional hours in both areas are recommended. Class Piano I and II are also recommended. Students intending to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance are also encouraged to take FREN 1010  and FREN 1020 .
