The Architectural/Construction Fundamentals Certificate Program emphasizes the basic skills needed to begin a career in architecture and building construction. Designed for high school graduates or those entering the design and construction field for the first time, the program covers six important areas. These areas include construction documents, architectural drawings, surveying, computer-aided drawing, the materials and methods of building construction, and the use of modern computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Certificate holders can work as technicians with architects, engineers, building component manufacturers, real estate developers, facility managers, commercial and service industries, residential and commercial contractors, and government agencies. All courses will transfer to the Architectural Design Technology, Architectural Design Concentration, A.A.S. degree.


Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, the student will be able to:

  • Utilize the reading of construction documents, sketches, construction principles, and the use of orthographic projection and perspectives to create architectural plans, sections, elevations, details, and specifications.
  • Analyze the development of construction documents and the design process, including pre-construction, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Identify AutoCAD components, organize drawings using layers and colors, and comprehend construction terminology and methods for light and heavy construction.
  • Record and report survey data while accurately operating surveying equipment.
  • Apply Windows OS, word processing, spreadsheet, programming, and communication skills to solve problems and complete tasks in engineering technology.
