AGRI 1050 Introduction to Soil Science

4 Credit Hour(s)


This course will engage students in understanding soil management relative to fertility, plant nutrition, tillage, erosion and environmental conditions as the origins of soils and soil properties are examined. The physical, chemical, and biological processes of soil will be introduced in addition to the relation of soil and land use management. 3 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory.

Learning Outcomes:

  • understand soil texture, soil structure, and soil fertility
  • show competency in soil fertility by addressing plants’ nutritive needs based on soil sampling
  • understand the chemical and biological processes related to plant nutrition and soil fertility
  • evaluate varying environmental stewardship practices
  • demonstrate practical skills by identifying common agronomic problems related to soil
  • value agricultural ecosystem sustainability
