MATH 1710 Precalculus Algebra

3 Credit Hour(s)
This course is an exploration of the real number system involving the topics: relations and functions, graphing techniques, linear and quadratic systems of equations, and inequalities.  This course also includes the following topics: matrices and determinants, conic sections, polynomial functions and theory of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and natural number functions. This course satisfies General Education core requirements for graduation.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and interpret the behavior of functions, including domain and range, end behavior, increasing and decreasing intervals, extrema, asymptotic behavior and symmetry.
  • Determine the domain and range as well as the horizontal, vertical, and oblique asymptotes of a rational function.
  • Perform polynomial division with both long and synthetic division
  • Transform exponential equations, solve logistic and exponential growth/decay application problems
  • Apply the rules of logarithms involving logarithms of products, quotients, powers, and change of base and solve logarithmic functions
  • Perform matrix operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and finding inverses
  • Understand and perform operations with conic sections
  • Understand the difference and compute values for sequences and series, and analyze arithmetic and geometric sequences.

Prerequisite(s): (1) Grade of “C” or higher in MATH 1000   or (2) ACT Math sub-score of 20 or higher.
