MLAB 1302 Introduction to Medical Laboratory Assistant 3 credit hours (2 lecture hours; 2 lab hours) Credit Hour(s) Introduction to Medical Lab Assistant prepares a student to be a multi-skilled healthcare provider with a defined focus on laboratory procedures and skills, including specimen collection, handling and processing, quality control, calibration of clinical instruments, slide staining, and microbiology set-ups, and point of care testing. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Function as a health care team member within the clinical laboratory.
- Assist laboratory professionals with preanalytical aspects of laboratory procedures.
- Use critical thinking and problem-solving appropriately in the role of medical lab assistant
- Follow standard operating procedures to collect/handle/process patient specimens.
- Abide by safe work practices within the laboratory.
Corequisite(s): MLAB 1301 This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.
