CHEM 1060 Survey of Chemistry 4 Credit Hour(s) Survey of Chemistry is designed for non-technical and allied health majors. This course includes a survey of general chemistry principles, the nomenclature and reactions of selected organic functional groups and concludes with topics directly related to biochemistry and the chemistry of life. The lab component introduces students to scientific measurements and to selected chemical experiments. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe basic concepts of matter and energy, chemical and physical processes, and scientific measurements.
- Describe the nuclear atom and explain the basis for the Periodic Table.
- Describe ionic and covalent bonds.
- Describe how chemical reactions occur and carry out simple calculations related to chemical stoichiometry.
- Explain intermolecular forces and how they affect the properties of liquids, gases and solids.
- Describe acids and bases.
- Name and describe selected reactions of organic functional groups including alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, amides, and other selected compounds.
- Describe carbohydrates and their functions.
- Explain what lipids are and their role in biochemical systems.
- Describe the composition of proteins and their functions within the human body.
- Describe the role of enzymes in biochemical systems.
- List different types of radioactivity, describe how radioactivity is measured and its effect on living tissue.
- Name and describe the equipment used in the chemical laboratory and demonstrate proper techniques for their use.
Prerequisite(s): READ 0810 , ENGL 0810 , and all required math learning support courses
