INTR 2070 Small Business Management for Translators and Interpreters

3 Credit Hour(s)
This course is designed to provide interpreters with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to establish and manage a successful small business within the field of interpretation. Through a combination of theoretical study, practical applications, case studies, and hands-on exercises, students will explore various aspects of entrepreneurship tailored specifically to the needs of interpreters. Topics covered include business planning, marketing strategies, financial management, client relationship building, legal considerations, and ethical guidelines. 
Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze the market demand and competitive landscape within the interpreting industry, employing critical thinking skills to identify potential niches and opportunities for business growth. 
  • Evaluate and develop comprehensive business plans that integrate strategic goals, financial projections, marketing strategies, and operational frameworks, demonstrating proficiency in synthesizing complex information. 
  • Apply financial management principles to effectively budget, forecast, and manage resources within a small business context, utilizing quantitative reasoning to make informed decisions regarding pricing, investment, and risk management. 
  • Synthesize ethical guidelines and professional standards within the field of interpretation to develop sustainable business practices that prioritize integrity, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity, demonstrating advanced levels of ethical reasoning. 
  • Create and implement targeted marketing campaigns and client engagement strategies tailored to the unique needs of interpreting services, utilizing creative problem-solving skills to effectively reach and communicate with diverse clientele across various platforms and mediums. 


This course is not designed for transfer to four-year universities. Students should check course recommendations with the college or university to which they intend to transfer for a baccalaureate degree. The receiving institution always makes the final decision about transferability of credits.
