BIOT 1610 Introduction to Forensic Science Technology

This course examines the basic principles and techniques of forensic sciences. Topics include the roles and responsibility of collection and preservation of evidence at crime scenes. The steps involved in the legal and laboratory investigation of injury and death, beginning at the crime scene and extending through judicial proceedings. This course is designed for biotechnology technicians, forensic science technicians, law enforcement and others with interests in forensic sciences.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Students will correctly identify various careers in forensics.
Students will demonstrate and ability to identify basic forms of physical evidence collected at crime scenes.
Students will demonstrate basic mathematical calculations necessary in preparation of solutions, metric conversion, and identification of drugs.
Students will identify the use of proper instrumentation for identification of hair, fibers, and paint.
Students will identify the use of proper chemicals and instrumentation for the collection of fingerprints.

Prerequisite(s): BIOT 1010 with a grade of “C” or better or permission of instructor
