ENGL 2860 Introduction to Film

3 (3 lecture hours) Credit Hour(s)


This course helps students develop a better understanding and appreciation of movies. Lab hours are used to view films. Students observe films more closely and become active participants in the art of the film experience.


General Education Learning Outcomes (TBR Approved)

Explain artistic, literary, or philosophical works within the context of the discipline.

Analyze the ways the various artistic, literary, or philosophical works reflect their cultural and historical context or contribute to the present (contemporary) world.

Identify cultural differences and commonalities through examining a diverse selection of artistic, literary, or philosophical works. 

Employ critical and analytical methodologies of the Humanities or Fine Arts, which may include direct observation, reflection, and ethical research. 
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze significant primary film texts and works of art as forms of cultural and creative expression. 

  • Explain the ways in which film’s humanistic and/or artistic expression throughout the ages expresses the culture and values of its time and place. 

  • Recognize the ways film structure changes, and these changes affect the standards of the art form. 

  • Practice critical film analytical theories in order to derive meaning from film texts.
