ENGL 2088 Introduction to Asian Literature

In this course, we’ll read and analyze literature from China, Japan, and Korea. We will explore the historical and cultural context of these literary works and the aesthetic and literary aspects of their style, theme, language, and structure. This course will thus provide students with opportunities to discuss literature in depth and help them gain an ability to analyze works from different cultures and traditions. Along the way, students will discover new perspectives and diverse cultures. The course will also include film screenings, including an anime. This introductory class is designed for everyone to enjoy and learn together, so students do not need prior knowledge of Asian languages or cultures.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

“Close read” literary texts.
Analyze literature using literary elements, such as point of view, setting, symbolism, conflict, plot, and more.
Identify significant social, cultural, and political issues in modern and contemporary East Asia.
Differentiate between the historical and cultural contexts of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writings.
Interpret Asian literary texts within their historical, social, and political contexts.
Demonstrate an appreciation for exploring Asian cultures in relation to the selected literary texts.
