General Program Learning Outcomes for the University Parallel, Music Emphasis, A.S.
Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:
- To describe the basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form and tone color.
- To recognize musical styles and periods.
- Discuss important composers and how they relate to the social climate of their era.
- To discover ways to become a better listener, not concerned with liking or disliking music, but rather perceiving it.
- To experience and appreciate a live musical performance.
Specific Music Based Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in music theory, notation, and harmony.
- Demonstrate technical fluency, including the ability to perform assigned repertoire with correct notes and rhythms, good tone, and appropriate tempo.
- Demonstrate proficiency in ear and/or sight training on their instrument or vocals.
- Create musical demo recordings.

Students must have at least 8 hours, including at least one semester of private instruction in voice or an instrument and at least one semester of an ensemble. Additional hours in both areas are recommended. Class Piano I and II are also recommended. Students intending to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance are also encouraged to take FREN 1010 and FREN 1020 . |
